ELECTRONIC ENGINEER

We are looking for an enthusiastic all-rounder to join the Xtera Product Design team to develop state of the art telecommunications equipment for use in subsea cable systems. This encompasses both high reliability submerged and terrestrial equipment. The role involves working with a broad range of products that contain a mix of electronic and electro-optic technologies.

EXPERIENCE

Design of circuits to provide the functionality required for a particular product.
Use of schematic tools to capture circuit designs.
Experience of the processes of PCB layout and manufacturing, and PCB population.
Generation of appropriate documentation.
The ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and written, for the presentation of new designs in peer reviews and formal product reviews.
Review and provide input to designs being developed by peers, throughout the design cycle.

TECHNOLOGY

Digital electronics – microcontrollers, memory devices, FPGAs (VHDL, from specification through to verification), serial interfaces – SPI, I2C and Ethernet.
Analogue electronics – op-amps, filters, DC-DC convertors, ADCs, and DACs.
Electro-Optics – Lasers, PINs, Modulators.

QUALIFICATIONS

Honours Degree in Electronics Engineering or Physics with Electronics.

This position would suit a graduate with 2 or more years’ experience of product development in the telecommunications sector.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT FIELD ENGINEER

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join the Xtera Customer Service team in turning up Fiber Optic Subsea DWDM telecommunication systems. The scope of work covers a wide range, such as installation, manufacturing, customer training, design documentation and remote support for our submerged and land-based equipment. It also involves international travel, and working with several contributors, both internal and external to Xtera.

Another key element is being the interface between Xtera and the customer. You are expected to be a lead contact in the day-by-day communication with the customer. As well as facilitating efficient communication with other parties involved in the project, such as consultants or subcontractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide support to our customers working with Transport Engineering, Planning, Network Operations, and Project Management groups.
Provide product support for DWDM and Submarine product lines including testing and turn-up, customer lab trials, and field trials.
Develop test plans for DWDM trials and field implementation.
Develop MOPs (Methods of Procedures) for specialized installation and/or testing requirements.
Provide technical support for Network personnel and be part of a team that is available for 24/7 customer responses.
In addition, the ideal candidate will assist with the development of training and present training sessions to customers on DWDM products and applications.
Work as part of a team to update product documentation and work closely with engineering and planning groups to help with to design, optimize, quote, and implement DWDM applications.

REQUIREMENTS

Excellent problem-solving skills.
The person must be a Self-Starter and team player focused on enhancing customer satisfaction. Possess excellent project management and organizational skills to document technical fieldwork.
Global Travel is required, up to 60% – at times, with an adjusted annual travel of 40%.
Proficient with common PC products, such as Microsoft Office.
Basic understanding of Optical principles.

SYSTEM ENGINEER

GLOBAL COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURE

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to “build the Internet” by joining the Xtera System Engineering team. You will play a key role the implementation of fibre optic undersea transmission system projects which are the backbone of today’s connected world.

The exciting role offers the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment as it will involve not only optical transmission technology but allow expanding into a number of different exciting areas, such as submerged and land-based equipment as well as surveys at various global locations, cable manufacturing or installation on land and at sea. It will involve some travel and working with several suppliers and stakeholders, both internal and external to Xtera.

Another key element of the role is acting as technical interface between Xtera and the customer during bidding or project implementation. As such you are expected to play a key role in the day-by-day communication as well as facilitating efficient communication with other parties involved in the project, such as consultants or subcontractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To manage or perform the following aspects of submarine system engineering:
- Bidding
  - Perform in-house preliminary system designs for bidding purposes
  - Define the tools required to support the bidding of submarine projects.
  - Contribute to writing of technical documentation required for bidding of submarine projects
  - Provide technical inputs to commercial discussions as part of tender responses
- Pre-Sales and customer-facing activities
  - Carry out computer simulations or lab / field transmission experiments for Pre-Sales activities
  - Participate in customer meetings, conferences and other sales meetings as required
- Project Support
  - Generate System Configuration Specifications outlining the implementation objectives for all aspects of a new project (line design, cable, terminal, PFE etc.)
  - Support the Project Manager(s) with all system design issues throughout the course of projects
  - Generate test specifications and procedures for system integration and acceptance testing (e.g., at the cable factory, at landing sites, or onboard installation vessels)
  - Provide on-site or remote assistance to field installation activities as required
- R&D
  - Manage / support transmission lab resources and experiments.
  - Support in-house development activities, particularly where impacting or interfacing with marine, cable or other submerged plant.
  - Participate in peer reviews of development where applicable

QUALIFICATIONS

Degree level in an Engineering discipline, or several years of relevant experience.

PROJECT MANAGER

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to manage subsea telecoms installation projects as part of a skilled team. This includes coordination and management of engineering, design, supply chain, field works and acceptance with the objective of delivering the project on time and on budget.

The role is truly multi-disciplinary as it involves understanding and orchestrating a number of different exciting aspects, e.g. submerged and land-based equipment, transmission technology, surveys at various locations, cable manufacturing or installation. It also involves working with several contributors, both internal and external to Xtera.

Another key element of the role is being the interface between Xtera and the customer. As such you are expected to play a key role in the day-by-day communication with the customer as well as facilitating efficient communication with other parties involved in the project, such as consultants or subcontractors.

RESPONISIBILITIES

- Project performance monitoring
  - Plan of Work (MS Project) and resource planning and tracking
  - Budget and cash flow tracking
  - Action and risk registers

- Reporting – internally and externally

  - Hire contractors and other staff, assigning responsibilities as the project dictates
  - Supervise the work of subcontractors and liaise with their project managers
- General
  - Manage Xtera project team including consultants and subcontractors
  - Maintain quality records g. test procedures, test results, qualification procedures
  - Ensure adherence to all health and safety standards and report issues
  - Identify costs of ongoing activities and ensure that these are compared with the budget

REQUIREMENTS

Proven experience as a project manager, ideally in submarine cable construction or related industries
In-depth understanding of applicable procedures and project management principles (Project Management qualification, PMP or similar will be a plus)
Understanding of key technologies associated with submarine cable projects
Familiarity with quality and health and safety standards
Good knowledge of MS Office including MS Project
Proven communication and negotiation skills
Excellent organizational and time-management skills

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

This is a challenging role, and we are looking for a Systems Administrator who will service our in-house and cloud-based infrastructure.

The Systems Administrator operates under the Director of Information Technology. The Systems Administrator is responsible for installing, maintaining, upgrading, and patching server software, applications, and hardware to ensure that our technology infrastructure runs smoothly and efficiently. The Systems Administrator is the first point of contact for any IT related questions/issues and provides hands on technical support. This position requires interacting with all levels of team members within our global organization, including external parties, over multiple time zones.

The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to travel as necessary.

The successful applicant will be ambitious, highly motivated and have superb communications skills. You will be responsible for the overall management of the hardware and software systems that encompass our environment including but not limited to:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Configure, maintain, and monitor existing infrastructure and ensure that it is functioning correctly.
Ensure the security of the IT systems and tools.
Ensure day-to-day maintenance tasks are performed, (backups, system monitoring, including review of logs, to verify the integrity of hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes)
Regular contact with end users, solve problems, and increase production efficiency.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures including coordinating and communicating with management, vendors, and impacted constituencies.
Manage and review daily backup operations ensuring that all required data is successfully preserved on appropriate media and sent offsite in accordance with archival policies.
Oversee the creation, administration, and management of user accounts.
Upgrade and configure software in support of business applications.
Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
Participate in the management of server patches and upgrades on a regular basis.

REQUIREMENTS

4+ year degree in Information Technology or equivalent experience and certifications
At least 4 years’ experience supporting a corporate IT environment
Experience with administering multiple operating systems and platforms (Windows, Linux, Solaris.
Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures of system administration including but not limited to: Windows Server, Linux, Active Directory, Azure AD, Microsoft 365, and VMware)
Strong familiarity with Active Directory and Group Policy
Hands-on hardware (computers, servers, software, systems, networks, printers, scanners, and network cabling) experience required.
Excellent trouble-shooting experience (hardware, software, TCP/IP, applications, OS) required
Proficiency in administration and support of computer hardware, network, servers, desktops, security, backups and email
Excellent communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Successfully perform job duties with limited supervision
Knowledge and understanding of network applications, web servers, email servers, firewalls, databases, file shares and print servers.
Experience with scripting and automation tools
A proven track record of developing and implementing IT strategy and plans
Ability to travel and maintain a flexible work schedule

PREFERED EXPERIENCE

Cisco CCNA and/or Microsoft MCSE certification preferred
Experience supporting Azure technologies, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Desktop and Server operating systems.
Experience with Solaris/Linux administration
Familiarity with Backup/Disaster Recovery strategies.
Understanding of network (WAN and LAN) routing, TCP, IP, DNS, WINS, DHCP, and other related internet protocols.
